|Counterpoint to Dynamics GP Integration Scenarios , Great Plains in POS Implementation Notes Computers Articles | November 13, 2010
Counterpoint POS application from Radiant Systems is very popular among small and even midsize retailers, including non-for-profit organizations, such as parks, forest preserves, zoos , deli stores.
In Counterpoint you can have pretty much all your POS devices, such as barcode laser scanners, customer tabloids, touch screens, credit card processing and signature capturing devices to be implemented.? We saw the scenarios, where Counterpoint was implemented in Membership-driven organization (Zoo , or State Park would be a good example).? Counterpoint is well geared toward Point of Sale, and it is open for transaction export to popular small business and even Corporate ERP systems, such as QuickBooks, Dynamics SL, Dynamics GP (Great Plains).? In this small paper we would like to come through case studies where Counterpoint really resolved the required integration conditions to Microsoft Dynamics GP:
1.?The Scenario.? Let?s assume that you are non-for-profit organization and you have several gates for walk-in (or probably more realistically to say ? drive-in) customers, where you charge them for daily car admission. Customers are paying in cash or check (in ideal for you case , but of course, some folks are trying to get their cash back one percent from their credit cards and this is actually where your pains begin)
2.?What Counterpoint is offering out of the box.? Well, you can either pick your Accounting system and then send transactions from Counterpoint into General Ledger and Accounts Payable (AP is often used for cutting checks to your suppliers from Great Plains, where you have distribution to be sent on the same account, as GL integration does the distribution job).? Now, let?s revisit the problem indicated in the paragraph #1.? You would need to control cash registers in the sense of cash payments (where you need to count the money for each register and cashier shift).? Then , when customer is paying by credit card, you typically do settlement daily (overnight) with each merchant.? Counterpoint definitely doesn?t do the job in out-of-the-box integrations, as CP is only offering GL and AP level integrations
3.?If the paragraph #2 is really important, you need to get POS transactions to be sent through Bank Reconciliation module.? This is where you are receiving your statement from the bank and matching the cash related transactions (SOP and POP modules originated) plus bank fees or interest earned.? Bank fees and interests are probably nice things to control, but we bet that the most important for you is to have your cashiers accountable for cash (in other words, to discourage them from stealing dollar bills)
4.?How it is doable in Counterpoint with Dynamics GP tandem?? We recommend you to setup Counterpoint just to export GL transactions , please select Custom accounting system and accept default DTS package to be deployed.? In this scenario Counterpoint exports GL (or if you need Accounts Payable) transactions to Text File (CSV).? Now Dynamics GP Integration Manager comes into the scenes.? Integration Manager is very flexible and it can base your integration on the SCV text file, as well as on ODBC data source.? If you would like to summarize your cash payments for Cash Register and Shift and consolidate daily payments for the specific credit card, in our opinion the best scenario is to do it directly in your SQL Server (2008 or 2005) view, where you are deploying either linked server construction, or OpenRowSet command in SQL Server Query (to create permanent view for ODBC compliant IM Integration)
5.?Integration Manager bonus topic ? VBA Scripting.? Let?s get into your shoes, as Microsoft Visual Studio programmer.? We understand that you may feel something like that ? damn , I do not really know what is your SQL View scripting, what is eConnect or Integration Manager Integration.? I am old fashioned Microsoft Visual Basic programmer with some exposure to MS SQL Server 2000 (I have also installed and deployed SQL 2005).? Please, cool down, IM exposes itself to VBA custom event handlers: Before Document, Before Document Commit, Before Integration , After Integration, etc.
